Legends inspire new icons, since 1951 The first course for industrial Design in the Netherlands celebrates her 60th anniversary with an exhibition in the gallery of the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. The exhibition by the Post Graduate Course Industrial Design not only shows present and past of the course itself, but also that of industrial design in The Netherlands in general. Important designers like Friso Kramer, Frans de la Haye, Gerrit Rietveld, Wim Rietveld, Willem Gispen and Kho Liang Ie were involved with the Post Graduate Course Industrial Design either as a teacher or student. The course also expresses her vision on design seen in the objects by new design talent. Alfred van Elk finished the course with honours in 1986 and joint the academy as a teacher since 1998. For the exhibition the Inventum Café Invento coffee pad machine and the Pharaoh furniture line, designed by Alfred van Elk, have been selected. The exposition is held from 4 until 24 November 2011. The opening will be on Friday 4th of November at 16.00 hr. |

Nederlicht, 100 years of Dutch lighting design With more than 100 lighting fixtures of Dutch designers, the exposition ‘Nederlicht’ at the Gorcums Museum gives an interesting overview of developments in lighting design in the Netherlands throughout the years. For this exposition a floor version of Manhattan lighting, over 20 years ago designed by Alfred van Elk for Philips, has been selected. This lighting fixture is part of a series of consumer luminaires, consisting of wall lighting, table lamps, floor lighting and suspended lighting fittings. Later developed series were prepared with infrared and could be remotely dimmed and turned on/off. These ranges were manufactured by Philips in 1989 and put on to the market world-wide. The series was recognized with the Norwegian Design Award. Next to designs of Philips, lighting objects are shown of, among others, Rietveld, Gispen, Lumiance, Droog Design and Moooi. The exhibition is open from December 11th 2009 until February 7th 2010. Gorcums Museum, Grote Markt 17, 4201 EB Gorinchem, The Netherlands www.designws.com |

Beachlife featuring Pharaoh Pharaoh furniture is featured in Beachlife, the new book by Frame Publishers about the best designed interiors, architecture and outdoor furniture that fits on beaches and waterfronts. Quote by Frame: “Clean, light and decorative, mosaic has been used for centuries to finish walls and floors. Giving the material an extra dimension, designer Alfred van Elk covered the svelte form of this Pharaoh chair with Opus Romano glass mosaic tiles from Bisazza. The low backrest or armrest gently curves like a glistening wave. Several chairs positioned back to back or side by side merge with one another to form a visual entity”.
